What is an interactive whiteboard?
An interactive whiteboard is a piece of hardware that looks much like a standard whiteboard, but it connects to a computer and a projector in the classroom to make a very powerful tool. When connected, the interactive whiteboard becomes a giant, touch-sensitive version of a computer screen. Instead of using the mouse, you can control your computer through the interactive whiteboard screen just by touching it with a special pen (or on some types of boards, with your finger). Anything that can be accessed from your computer can be accessed and displayed on the interactive whiteboard. For example, you can easily display Word documents, PowerPoint presentations, photographs, websites, or online materials.
What are the benefits of Interactive Whiteboards?
Interactive whiteboards (also known as smart boards) resemble traditional dry-erase marker boards but have the added functionality of touch recognition. Users can interact with computer programs, documents, and images by touching the screen with a stylus or even with a finger. Benefits to those giving business presentations or academic lectures include advanced content interaction, increased audience engagement, sharing and storing of presentation events and interaction with networked computers and peripherals.
Use of interactive whiteboard for education
An interactive whiteboard gives you the ability to interact with projected content. Using included stylus pens, or your finger in some cases, you can draw lines, highlight text, and interact with elements such as hyperlinks or buttons. This interactivity allows a presenter or a teacher to draw attention to specific parts of a lesson or presentation in real time. Furthermore, the teacher or the student can launch applications from the whiteboard to bring together various multimedia technologies without having to sit behind a computer or podium. Students, particularly younger students, also enjoy the tactile sensation of engaging physically with the board, rather than absorbing information passively.

How do I connect my interactive board to my computer and projector?
To connect your interactive board to your computer, there are two cables that are required: a VGA cable and a USB cable. The VGA cable supplies the video signal to the projector and the USB cable provides the interactivity connection between the interactive whiteboard and the computer. Plug one end of the VGA cable into the wall point and the other into the computer. Plug the small end of the USB cable into the wall point and the other (flat) end of the USB into your computer. Note: The instructions above assume that a wall plate is being used for the installation; some installations may use a HDMI cable instead of a VGA cable.
How do I clean my interactive whiteboard?
Use the supplied micro-fiber cloth and dampen with water if needed. For stubborn marks - spray Windex onto the micro-fiber cloth first, then wipe the surface. Avoid using any harsh abrasives as these can damage the whiteboard surface.
What should we do if someone writes on the interactive board with a permanent marker?
Although the Interactive Whiteboard is not designed for use with permanent markers, should someone write with one on the board, use a regular dry-erase marker, scribble back and forth over the permanent marker ink and erase. You will see it gradually disappear. Repeat if necessary.
Do I have to use special pens on the interactive whiteboard?
Interactive Whiteboards can be used with your finger or a stylus. No special pens are required so there is nothing to lose or replace. No batteries are required for the stylus.
